Baltic Environmental Forum Latvia

Baltijas Vides Forums (Baltic Environmental Forum-Latvia/ BEF-Latvia) is a non-governmental organisation established in 2003. The overall mission of the BEF-Latvia is to strengthen environmental protection by developing co-operation and dialogue between stakeholders. As a network of organisations in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany and Russia called as BEF Group, the BEF-Latvia provides regional knowledge and communication skills on the Baltic Sea and its catchment. The BEF-Latvia promotes public and stakeholder engagement in environmental policy planning and implementation. The BEF-Latvia acts as a facilitator and networking organisation that seeks to build stakeholder capacity for better environmental protection. International and national events (seminars, trainings, info days) are organised regularly. BEF-Latvia has experience in data collection and comparative analysis on different environmental issues, including water. Several targeted publications and recommendations on EU policy implementation at various levels have been elaborated. BEF organises and moderates discussion forums on new and challenging issues for national, regional or European stakeholders, e.g. natural water retention measures, substitution and reduction of hazardous substances, innovative marine biodiversity indicators and cost efficiency of environmental measures. The working style and competencies of the team have resulted in the trust of the regional stakeholders for closer and direct cooperation projects from local to interregional level.
